Blackjack Myths - 10 Common Ones That Will See You Lose!

Author: Sacha Tarkovsky

There are many blackjack myths, below we have outlined the most common ones and these myths are not just believed by novice players.

Whatever your playing experience, the 10 blackjack myths below will cost you money, so make sure you avoid them!

Blackjack card counting is sure fire way of making money

This blackjack myth is only partially true in that the answer is yes, but most players get the time period wrong.

You cannot look at it from anything but a LONG period of playing and we are talking thousands of hands. Short term losses do come and do last a long time

Blackjack card counting is a predictive theory

The above blackjack myth stems from the above many people believe card counting is a predictive theory, it isnt.

Blackjack card counting is simply a probability theory and cannot with any certainty tell you what cards are coming from the deck.

All it can do is put the odds in your favor over the longer term.

The aim of blackjack is to get as close to 21 as possible

This is NOT the object of the game; it is simply to beat the dealer's hand, nothing more.

Often, the best strategy is to stand depending on your hand and the dealer's up card.

Many players lose a hand because they hit their hands, when according to basic strategy they statistically should stand and this remains one of the most common blackjack myths

Bad players affect play

Other players have no effect on your winning longer term.

It is true that bad plays made by novice players can affect the outcome of a hand for all other players at the table but it has been be proved that the converse is true and could result in the entire table winning.

Take insurance

Insurance is a bad bet in blackjack.

If a player were to take insurance when they had a blackjack, then they would be giving up 13% of the profit of each blackjack they draw.

For a player to break even with insurance, they would have to guess correctly 1 in 3 times, and these odds longer term dont favor the player.

Only if you are an experienced card counter should you consider taking insurance and generally the advice for most players is doing.

The dealer is HOT

Putting it in simple terms, when you are winning, the cards in the deck are in your favor, and when there not you are probably losing.

Dealers in blackjack have no choices to make; they follow the house rules to the letter.

A player does have choices, and it is these choices that determine how successful they are make the right ones and success follows make the wrong ones and the converse is true.

The blackjack myth of the dealer is "hot" is normally a sign of frustration, or characteristic of players who believe in lady luck.

Players entering in the middle of a shoe can cause you to lose

This is simply the same as a player taking an extra card, or a player leaving in the middle of the game. Neither of these events will cause you to lose.

You are due a win soon.

The dealer has won seven hands on the trot, so you are bound to win soon. Read the blackjack myth the dealer is hot and you will see why this is not true.

The chances of winning the next hand for any player is an independent event of what happened previously.

Over the longer term the number of hands a player will win will be about 48%, but this is over the VERY longer term.

In the short term say a few hands, the previous hands are irrelevant in terms of the probability of winning or losing. The odds are in the players favor over the longer term so think thousands rather than single figures.

The deuce is the most favorable card for a dealer

We notice the deuce because it makes the dealers hand frequently, it is only one card that can "bust" the hand, (10), if the total is 12.

Mathematically though, players lose more when the "up card" the dealer has is an Ace or a 10.

Dont believe in the blackjack myth of the deuce it is simply not true.

Don't split 9,9 against a dealer's 9, you're making two bad hands

When the player has 9 & 9 against the dealer's 9, the player has a total of 18.

This doesn't beat 19 as most players assume that the dealer has a 10 in the hole.

It is proven mathematically a player will lose less money by splitting the 9's than by electing to stand.

Blackjack big profits over the longer term can be yours

Blackjack is a game where you can gain a sportive edge over the casino longer term.

Many of the blackjack myths above are related to players wanting to hurry their winnings, be patient avoid the blackjack myths above and you could become a long term winner at blackjack.
